It was Spooktacular!

| October 29, 2018

The High School’s band hosts an event called a Spooktacular where the elementary kids are invited to see the instruments, hear how they sound, and even play a few. Afterward, there is a short concert. Sam couldn’t wait to go. She is awfully musical these days! The kids were invited to show up in costume too so Sam wore her Halloween costume, a cat. Right away she found a few classmates, Natalia and Gia.

The only instruments the kids could really try were string instruments, but I guess that makes sense. You can’t have a bunch of kids putting their mouths on other instruments! Watching Sam with a bass was so adorable. The thing is bigger than her just about!

A violin is much more her size, but I think she wasn’t too sure about holding it up under her chin like that. She had fun playing though.

We would love for Sam to join the school band, but in elementary there are not as many options and guitar is not one of them. She’d have to choose something else, which for Sam would be hard. She does love playing, but getting her to practice has been tough. I don’t know if she would be ok with learning two instruments at the same time. We’ll see this spring when she would have to decide. Who knows by then?

One little side note on our night. This pencil dispenser was in the lobby and Sam and I assumed it did not work. We put money in and, voila! Out popped a freshly sharpened new pencil. Sam loved this thing! She hopes that they put it in the new high school when it is built. I hope so too. It looks like a relic, but it’s a damn cool relic and they need to keep it. A pencil vending machine? Gotta love it.

Pumpkin Carving

| October 28, 2018

It’s almost Halloween and Sam wanted to carve a pumpkin. We don’t do one every year, mostly because Halloween is really not my thing, but she wanted to and we had the pumpkin already, so ok. Sam didn’t want to do just a face this year so we found some stencils and Sam picked a bat. I told her I would help her carve the hard parts, but mostly, she did it herself.

She looks a little too happy to be wielding the knife don’t you think? It is just a simple pumpkin carving tool, but still…I wonder about my little psycho. 🙂

She made me scoop out most of the guts because she finds it pretty disgusting. Well, yeah. We did save all the seeds for the backyard critters, which was nice I think.

Penny is ever so helpful…

When it was done, I think it turned out great!

Sam loves her pumpkin and was very proud of her efforts. I think she should be. We’re ready for Halloween!

Walkathon 2018!

| October 19, 2018

The school held its annual walkathon and it was a beautiful day! Every year the kids walk after the fundraiser for the school. It is always a huge success and the kids love it!

Even though they are supposed to walk as a class, it turns into a free for all very quickly. Sam found her friends Giselle and Alaina pretty quickly. I really want her to make new friends this year, but it is early yet and so she was happy to see familiar faces.

The school mascot, the Cougar, was walking too and a bunch of kids cornered him for a photo!

After the kids walked, they all sat and watched the teachers. There was a new game this year, Operation Cougar Drop, where you could buy a ping pong ball for $5 and the balls would be dropped off the roof by the principal while teachers tried to catch them in buckets labelled with dollar amounts. If your ball went into a bucket, you won! Here is Sam and her friend, Layla, waiting to see if they hit it big!

Miss McCray tried her best and I think she got quite a few balls. The kids were all cheering their teachers on!

It was such a fun day. I always volunteer to “work”, not that there is much to do, because that way I am allowed on the field with the kids. It is such a blast!

**Update:  They raised$35, 194.00! That is way above their goal and almost $5,000 more than last year. Sam won $10 in Operation Cougar Drop and also came home with other fundraising prizes like a free yearbook, a few homework passes, free treat at lunch, and her all time favorite prize…getting to put her handprint on the Wall of Fame in the cafeteria. She wanted that so badly, and now she will be on the wall! Go Sam!

Army Veteran Poppy

| October 15, 2018

Veterans’ Day is coming up again and this year, in addition to displaying pictures of family members who are currently serving or are veterans outside the classrooms, the kids were sent home with paper stars to decorate in honor of a veteran in their family. The stars are going to be hung from the ceiling all over the school. No pictures were allowed to be affixed, but the kids could draw or decorate any way they wanted. Of course, Sam wanted to honor her Poppy, who was in the army. This is her star:

I think it’s a wonderful likeness. 🙂 She didn’t know what to do with the back since the marker showed through, and then she found this black and white star stickers and put one of those on there. Sam thought it was appropriate since Poppy’s favorite color was black. I’m so proud of my little girl. She loves her Poppy and pays tribute to him whenever she can.

New School Pic

| October 10, 2018

School pictures came home today! Sam’s smiles are always a bit forced in school pictures, and her hair was not exactly the neatest, but she is still my beautiful girl!
