My Superstar!

Each year at Sam’s school there is a contest where the students can submit artwork to be considered for the cover art of the yearbook. Last year Sam did not enter (I am not even sure it was on her radar) but this year she was determined.  The theme this year is Everyday Scenic Superheroes. Here is what Sam drew.

She really wants to win, and I told her a million times that she can’t be disappointed if she doesn’t, because even though her drawing is EXCELLENT in my opinion, you never know. She wants to try though, and I am all for it. Even if she doesn’t win, there is a chance she could get an honorable mention and still be inside. Fingers crossed!

Freezing Stuff

The weather has been absolutely hideous. Cold and dark and just awful. We are all stuck in the house. Sam and I were up early (as usual) and she was off for MLK day. I was watching the news and they kept going back to a guy who spends a lot of time apparently, freezing random stuff when it’s cold outside just to see how long it takes for things to freeze and what happens to it. Sam decided this was a fabulous idea, and hey, why not? What else are we going to do on a day with a high of 19 and a low of 10? All in the name of science! And keeping Sam from being bored. Let’s not forget that.

Our first project was soaking a towel and then laying it outside. Man that thing froze fast!

We also cracked an egg…

Some liquid soap…

And a wet string.

Sam tried an experiment she heard about where you put salt on an ice cube and then you can pick it up with a piece of string. It works!

Later we froze hand sanitizer…

String cheese…

And more string!

Sam kept a chart of everything she froze, how long it took, how much it froze, and whether it could be reused once it thawed. Not a bad educational lesson for a cold morning!

Rock Star!

Sam and her old friend, Julia had a playdate recently. It’s been a while, and they did all their normal stuff. We made slime, they did dress up in all of Sam’s clothes (this was Julia’s fourth outfit) and then, since Julia is playing violin in band, she and Sam decided to rock out. I think they might be famous some day!

My Pet Cat

Sam and Mark have been practicing guitar a lot and often, the kitties are hanging around. They seem to like guitar music, which is not surprising. It’s a soft sort of sound that would appeal to a cat’s ears. Well…at least the acoustic guitar. Zach and Penny are not too fond of the electric guitars. One night Sam was practicing and didn’t want to play anymore, but I wanted her to keep going. Penny was hanging around so I told Sam to play a song for Penny. Sam picked a song called, My Pet Cat. I think Penny liked it!

My Kid is Totally Going to Get Beat Up

The Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl last year, and somehow are in the playoffs this year, so of course, everyone is all hyped up about them winning again. As anyone who knows us knows, we could care less about the Eagles. Or football. Or sports. We really can’t get into all the hubbub that surrounds sporting events and how much time is spent on them. Because the Eagles are playing on Sunday, today was Eagles Spirit Day at school. Which means, all the kids are supposed to dress up in Eagles colors or wear jerseys or whatever they have. Sam generally loves spirit days and will participate fully. I knew she would not want to participate in this. So, this morning, when I was helping her pick out clothes, I pulled a pink pattered fleece top and jeans or something out of her drawer and told her that because it was Eagles Spirit Day, she should wear something so opposite Eagles, like bright pink, in protest. A few seconds later she says, “I’ll be right back!” and goes flying down the stairs. I hear her talking to the Google Home but couldn’t hear what she was saying. When she came back up she said, “I have to wear black, white, and old gold.” I asked her why and she said, “I asked Google who the Eagles were playing this weekend and it said the New Orleans Saints, so then I asked what the Saints colors are and Google said black, white, and old gold, whatever that is. So that is what I want to wear.” And, she did. A gold, black and white top, black pants with gold unicorns, a gold headband and sneakers. I can’t believe she made it home from school unscathed!
