Sick Sam : (

Posted By on September 20, 2010

Poor little Sam has had quite a few days!  On Thursday she started running a fever of about 101.8 , and she had one pretty much every day through the weekend somewhere in the 100-101 range. We called her doctor on Saturday and they told us if she had no other symptoms of illness (which she didn’t) to not rush her in for an appointment over the weekend, but if she still had a fever on Monday, to bring her in.  Sam spent the night with my parents on Saturday and when my mom brought her  back on Sunday, she had no fever at all.  We were so relieved that maybe her fevers were over.  In the afternoon on Sunday though, she started running a fever again.  By the time she went to bed, she was fine though, the Motrin seemed to do the job and her temp was normal.

After she was asleep for about 2 hours, she woke up crying.  When I went to get her, she was really clammy and sweaty so we took her temperature.   We were shocked that it was only about 95.5!  We thought for sure her thermometer had to be wrong so we used another one with the same result.  It was pretty scary because that is really low.  We called the doctor’s office and the nurse said to try to warm her up with blankets and bring her in on Monday, but if we could not get her temperature up to take her to the hospital.  We tried for a while but her temp didn’t seem to be improving (it actually seemed to get worse) so off to the ER we went.

By this time it was after 10:00 p.m. and poor little Sam didn’t know why we whisked her out of her crib and off into this bright, cold, loud place.  Her temperature when we got there was only 96 degrees so they agreed she needed to be seen.  Typical of ERs, it took an eternity to actually be seen by a doctor, and more than 2 and a half hours later we were on our way home with no diagnosis.  But thankfully, Sam’s temperature was normal by that time, so we were just glad for that.  We finally got her into bed at around 1:00 a.m.  She had a restless night, but at least she was sleeping.  Mark and I got a heck of a lot less sleep than Sam did, that’s for sure.

We took her to the doctor for a follow-up visit this morning and she checked out perfectly fine.  Her temperature was normal, her ears, throat, lungs, and heart were fine, and she was a happy little munchkin.  The pediatrician thinks she had a virus which caused her initial fevers and when she woke up all clammy her fever had finally broken, and since her room was cool, the combination of being sweaty and cool were enough to lower her body temperature that way.  She told us not to worry because otherwise Sam was just fine.

Mark and I were so relieved.  It is hard to believe, but Sam is almost one year old and this was her first ever sick visit to the doctor.  Well, I guess after a year of waiting, Sam thought we deserved one heck of a ride!  Next time, let’s hope for just a case of the sniffles, ok Sam?

Seriously though, it was very scary for Mark and I because our little girl never really gets sick and this time, it was more than a run of the mill illness.  We never thought when her fevers started that we would wind up in the ER.  We are just so thankful that she is a healthy girl.  She got lots of hugs and kisses all day today and went to bed exhausted. Here’s hoping for a quiet night!
