Communing with nature

Mark and I are always trying to spend time outside, but I swear, it is getting increasingly more difficult. It seems like the winters are getting longer and longer, and the days that are not cold are either ridiculously windy or rainy, or both. This past weekend was a bit windy but we decided to venture outside anyway to get some fresh air. Sam wasn’t feeling well (more on that in a later post….) so we figured it would do her some good.
It is really cute taking her outside now. Not only is she walking all around, which is more fun than having to carry her all over, but she is starting to explore like crazy. One of her favorite pasttimes has become scouring the lawn for acorns. Why, we have no idea, but acorns are truly exciting to Sam. The lawn behind ours has a huge oak tree that drops about a million acorns in our yard every year, which is a huge pain for us when doing lawn clean-up, but the squirrels love them (and we love the squirrels) and now Sam loves them.
Here we are examing some new ones. I try to help her to find the non-broken ones sometimes.
Our pretty little girl gazing at her treasures.
She started out collecting as many acorns as she could in her little hands, but soon she couldn’t carry any more. I found her a bucket of sorts (really a sand mold) for her to put them in. She now proudly carries it around full of her acorns. It is cute watching her examine each one she picks up or we hand to her, then either put it back on the ground, or in the bucket. She is very discriminating about what is deemed worthy!
I pulled out a bunch of her other sand toys just to give her something to do. We really need to get her some lawn toys for the summer! Look at that smile!
Here are Sam’s precious acorns. She has been very busy!
One last photo — Sam paused long enough to take a picture with her devoted daddy.
