And it wasn’t even a Crayola

Sam ate her first crayon yesterday. A piece of one anyway. A red one. At Chili’s. She was not loving it, not that she won’t do it again, mind you. I knew it was coming since Sam’s only interest in crayons seems to be (a) eating them, (b) taking them out of the box and throwing them in the air, or (c) breaking them. Actual *coloring* seems to be out of the question. I can only hope this is not a frequent occurrence but with our adventurous little girl, I am not counting on it!
In other news, her cold seems to be just about gone. She has the last little bit of a cough and a little bit of a runny nose, but she is pretty much back to her normal self. Less tantrums, more smiles and giggles, more playtime. I on the other hand still have a bad cold, and now Mark and my mom are starting to feel a bit sick. Well, what can you do? When wiping runny noses a million times a day and having her cough all over you, it is to be expected. I am just glad she is feeling better since we can all deal with illness better than she can.
We turned Sam’s carseat around yesterday in my car so that she is riding facing forward. She had to be a year old and 20 lbs before she could legally do so, and even though she has been old enough for a long time, it took her forever to reach the correct weight! She will be 18 months old on Tuesday and she is really only maybe about 22 lbs I think. When we took her out for the first time yesterday, Sam looked like a deer in headlights riding around. I don’t think she quite knew what to make of all the images whizzing past the window. But as Mark commented, what does she know? For all she knew we got in the car and sat for a while and we wound up somewhere else. By the time we were on our way home from shopping and dinner, she looked right at home. She was enjoying the view, laughing and playing, and having a great time each time Mommy turned around to peek at her. She also got a kick out of the sunroof.
It is really nice being able to see her clearly now when I stop at red lights. And it is easier getting her in and out of the car in general. We are going to switch Mark’s car and my mom’s around too as soon as we can. I think we will have to — Sam isn’t going to want to ride backwards anymore after being able to see what is going on in my car!

I just heard on the news today that the seat should be turned backwards until they are two and that older children should now be in car seats til they are 12 or reache a certain weight.
Yeah, we heard that too, one day after we switched the seat. We thought about turning it back, but legally, she is fine since she is over 1 year and over 20 pounds. I always want her to be safe, and maybe now they are saying she ideally should be rear facing for 2 years, but I feel like there is always going to be something. I mean, we never even wore seat belts! Kids are supposed to ride only in the back seat until age 13 now, and it used to be 12. Honestly! 13? They drive with a permit 2 years after that, and they have barely seen the front seat of a car. It is crazy.
I agree w/you. In the 50’s the car seats were in the front between the driver and passenger seats. I don’t think Sam would like to face the back, now that she has faced the front and can see things. Kate let Nicholas sit in the front passenger seat from the time he was 8. That I don’t agree with because that is the unsafest seat in the car. I think it shoul be til age 10 or they reach a certain weight.
