Learning our letters

Mark and I have really been trying to work with Sam on her letters (or, her ABs as she calls them). She knows the alphabet, and has for a really long time, but she doesn’t recognize most of the letters nor can she write them. So, even though I know they will teach her in preschool this fall, we wanted to really focus on them. Like in most things, she is learning better from Mark than from me. He comes up with good games for her to teach her instead of just trying to out and out, teach. He came up with a game where he gets her letter flashcards and spread them out on the floor. He then drew a letter on her Magna Doodle and made her find the same letter on the floor. She did really well but quickly progressed to, “I can draw it, Daddy!”

I have to say, for her first real attempt at writing, she did so well!  Here are some of her creations.

Sam still holds her writing implements in a fist, but we have been working on getting her to use a proper grip. I think once she does, her letters will take on even better shape.

(She always draws extra lines on her E…)

Besides the drawing, we have been pointing out letters in her books and asking her to tell us what they are. She has been doing great.  Every day she learns more and more letters. She asks me now all the time when we read, “Let’s learn my letters!” She is excited about it and so proud when she knows each one. There are a bunch she still does not know, but I am so amazed at how quickly she is learning. Kids really are such sponges – now is the time to learn everything we can throw at her. I can’t wait until she starts school to see what she figures out next!

Good for Sam. I love that she is wearing her tutu. Is she excited or worried about starting pre-school?
