Vacation 2014, Day 4 – The Burke’s Arrive!
Posted By pamelamyers on July 14, 2014
Tuesday morning sun was shining bright and Sam couldn’t wait to head for the beach. It takes the adults a while to get moving, what with the packing of the beach bag and all, but Sam couldn’t understand why we couldn’t go right now! Her poor forlorn little face collapsed on the stairs in frustration.
Finally, we all were there. We found a big horseshoe crab in the sand and Sam had to bring Grandmom down to see what she discovered.
On the way down to the jetty, shell bags at hand and ready to go! In case you haven’t noticed, the jetty is always the morning destination. It has been since Sam was a baby. At the time, it was the only place we could get her into the water, but now she just loves exploring.
My little fashionista, posing with her daddy.
Sam loves to show you everything she finds. She is quite the jetty expert and Grandmom got an education about clams and crabs and whatnot.
I do like helping her find interesting things, but sometimes, it is nice to just stand back and let her explore and discover on her own.
Hermit crab!
It was a bit windier and thus chillier this day than the others and Sam got a bit cold. She asked me if she could sit under a towel but this isn’t exactly what I thought she was going to do!
What did I say about the wind? Thank goodness for hat straps!
As the afternoon wears on, the tide always starts to come in and sometimes gets pretty close to our chairs. We were watching the huge hole on the left of the photo that a couple of kids dug stop the water from coming, so Rich dug a trench in front of his chair to stop the water if it came up, sort of as a joke. He was determined not to give in to the tide!
It was also pretty windy, and he held onto the umbrella to keep it from blowing away. This picture cracks me up – holding the umbrella, trench at his feet. Man vs. Nature!
Success! The trench worked! Sam had her doubts, but we showed her that her Pop Pop knows a thing or two.
She put on her daddy’s hat so that she and Pop Pop would match for the photo.
Later that night, we all relaxed in the house. Krista and Adam were arriving with Maddox and Ryder and we couldn’t wait! Sam told me, “I don’t have to play with you and Grandmom anymore!” Gee, thanks Sam. But I know what she meant. She wants us to play with her constantly and we have to tell her sometimes she needs to play on her own. Maddox will solve that problem!
While we waited, Sam and her Grandmom enjoyed some fresh air on the porch…
…and she and Pop Pop played checkers. Well, he tried to teach Sam how to play checkers. I don’t think it went all that well.
The Burke family finally arrived after Adam was done working and it really started to feel like our vacations used to. At least as much as it could without Sandi. 🙁 Sam helped Mark feed Ryder. She looks so bored! It was about 3 seconds after I took this picture that she asked Mark if he could take the bottle back.
We all walked down to Marita’s for ice cream. Boy, Sam couldn’t get there fast enough!
Time for bed. Ryder’s getting a snuggle from his Pop Pop.
It had been a long, busy day and Sam was really wired from all the activity. I had a hard time getting her to settle down to sleep. She kept goofing around, sitting up in bed, interrupting the story I was trying to read. I got very frustrated, as I tend to do, and suddenly Sam said, “Thank you, Mommy.” I asked her, “Thank you for what? What are you talking about?” I was really confused. She replied, “For all your kisses.” When I gave her a hug, she said, “See, you calmed down. You were all loud and mad and now you calmed down.” Boy. I don’t even know what to say about that. I hate that I get “loud and mad” and am trying very hard to not be that way. Sometimes, it is hard for me to control. I am a loudish sort of person. But I don’t like being that way. And Sam doesn’t like it, obviously, and knows just what she has to do to shut it down. I am glad about that, but sad that she needed to find a way to do so. If that wasn’t a lesson to be learned…
Tomorrow is another day, Sammy. And no one will be loud or mad – just fun, fun, FUN!
