Flat Stanley

Sam was sent a Flat Stanley by my cousin’s daughter, Lana Kate, as part of a kindergarten project. Once I explained to Sam who Flat Stanley was, she was very excited about taking him out on an adventure. On a day where the weather was warm and clear we went to a lake at the edge of an outdoor range that Mark goes to. It was a very quiet, peaceful spot for Sam to just run around and explore. Pretty nice, right?
Sam showed Flat Stanley all around and made sure he saw the fish in the lake.
She set him up to sit by the water and relax. It had been a busy day of exploring!
We saw this really cool bird flying around and when it landed, I just managed to get a quick picture before it flew away. I think it is a red-winged blackbird (which seems obvious – being that he’s black, with a red striped wing…)
Sam took Flat Stanley to explore the “jungle”. No monkeys though, much to Sam’s dismay.
Right before we left, Sam found a bunch of stumps from a tree that was cut down. Sam the mountain climber!
One of the funniest moments of the day came as we were leaving. Mark drove around the range showing Sam all the different areas and we got to a section where you would have to back out because there was no room to turn around. Rather than do that, Mark just kept driving a bit, off the dirt road and into the grass ahead of it. Well, Sam thought it was hysterical and crazy. She kept saying to Mark in a panicked voice, “I don’t think you’re supposed to drive here, Daddy!!!” Hey, that’s what a four wheel drive is for, right?
